Benefits

Born Digital

ESCOLAR is far more than a scanned textbook. This program takes advantage of the latest technology to engage students in a rich, multimodal and multimedia learning environment. Interactive features include text-to-speech, digital note-taking, pop-up vocabulary definitions, interactive games and assessments, videos, and alt-tagged images.

NGSS Aligned

ESCOLAR is fully aligned with the crosscutting concepts, disciplinary core ideas, and science and engineering practices of the Next Generation Science Standards. By using this curriculum, teachers adopt the NGSS and greatly minimize lesson planning time.

Accessible

ESCOLAR is accessible on a user-friendly website to a wide range of teachers and students. The online environment has features to enhance accessibility, including alternative text for people who are blind, screen readers for the hard-of-hearing, a structure that facilitates keyboard navigation within each page, video captions, and JavaScript coding.

Teacher
Involvement

ESCOLAR uses technology to help teachers teach—not as a replacement for teachers. Teachers guide students through the science curriculum, facilitating the completion of lessons, helping students form teams for project-based learning, differentiating instruction, monitoring progress, and leading classroom demonstrations and discussions.

Student
Engagement

ESCOLAR supports different learning styles by giving students diverse activities and control of their learning environment. Students are less likely to be bored and more likely to deepen knowledge when they engage with science through modalities such as reading, video, interactive, games, virtual experiments, and hands-on projects.

Teacher
Resources

ESCOLAR gives teachers useful online resources to plan and teach science lessons. These include a free tutorial, as well as lesson plans, answer keys, glossaries, automated student progress reports, and access to students’ digital notes.

Hands-On
Activities

ESCOLAR incorporates hands-on learning activities to help students gain a deep understanding of scientific concepts and develop key skills such as communication, collaboration, inquiry, problem solving, and flexibility. Activities include experiments, data collection, observations, model building, and engineering design.

Project
Based Learning

ESCOLAR relies on project-based learning (PBL), a method that has been shown to help students learn by actively participating in projects with their peers. Students engage in the scientific process as they research problems, conduct investigations, and discuss results with each other.

Collaborative
Forums

ESCOLAR encourages students to share their ideas through online forums. Students and teachers participate in forum activities at each stage within a science unit, and can choose to share their posts within a class, across classes, across schools, and even across countries.

Interactive
Assessments

ESCOLAR incorporates interactive formative and summative student assessments to promote and assess understanding of science content. Interactive quizzes, with immediate feedback, help students see what they have learned, and automated reports from these quizzes help teachers gauge progress.

Teacher and Student Testimonials

“The website format is clear and easy to navigate and the platform that the students are using is self-explanatory.”

Teacher from Oregon
“Students love the forum. Students are intrigued when somebody says something to them there. The professional development itself prepared me and put me at ease.”

Teacher from Oregon
“All those (technology) supports played a part in students with learning disabilities being able to participate.”

Teacher from Oregon
“What I’m learning about kids with disabilities is that keeping their attention is one of the hardest things, and this curriculum does that because of all those learning modalities. Overall, it is a good program for kids with special needs.”

Teacher from Oregon
“The data showed that kids with learning disabilities actually came up to the level of the other kids by the post-test. I thought it was really impressive.”

Teacher from Oregon
“The kids are enjoying the different videos online. The microscopic views are pretty cool. I think the subject matter is interesting, fun, and colorful”

Teacher from Georgia
“The kids loved posting their work to the forum where everyone could see it. Even the kids who traditionally didn’t do as well academically produced improved work, because it would be visible to other students in other classrooms.”

Teacher from Oregon

“I like to learn science with this program, because I can investigate new stuff that I never knew before.”

“I would like to do more like this activity because it’s fun and interesting.”

“I like to study with the technology so this program really works for me.”

“I like it because it is more fun than reading a book.”
